This fast growing Gesneriad produces butter yellow blooms and is easy to grow. It does great in terrariums and seems tolerant of a wide variety of conditions so long as temperatures are moderate (60-80) and humidity is high. The leaves are rather thin, and have a large swath of silver down the center, with silver leaf venation.
This trailing Gesneriad makes an excellent house plant as well as vivarium plant, and blooms often. The flowers and white with tattered edges. It is a very easy species that can grow as a foreground plant or in a hanging basket, where it will grow long pendant vines. It is found in Mexico, Costa Rica, Brazil, and Peru.
This spectacular Gesneriad is from South America, and is a great terrarium Gesneriad for it’s compact size and slow growth habit. I have struggled to get this plant established for years, only recently having some success with clay substrate. It is common for the lower leaves to rot out if not kept in ideal growing conditions (which seem a bit hard to pinpoint). It likes high humidity and good drainage and when it’s happy, is not difficult to flower. The […]
This Episcia is native to French Guiana and does wonderfully in terrarium conditions. It will grow partially up a wood surface or over substrate. The leaves are under 4″ when full grown, and flowers are fringed white with purple in the center.
By the time I’d noticed this plant, it was close to blooming size, probably grown from seed on an order of plants from Ecuaflora. In-person the leaves look a bit more bronze than they do here. So far it has been easy to grow and it flowered within a few months of germinating. It is a vigorous grower and a big enough plant will flower more or less constantly. It’s reached about 9″ for me but may get larger with […]
This beautiful Nautilocalyx from Peru has recently been described. Coming from sandstone habitats in the Rio Cenepa basin of Peru, Nautilocalyx rugosus is very distinctive from others in the genus. The large oval, bumpy and hairy leaves lay flat on the ground. Making a good sized rosette unlike anything else. A few times a year, it flowers with large white crystalline flowers. It is quite the show stopper. Even though it comes from an area where it grows directly on […]
