This Begonia came as a generous extra from Begonia Club and came labeled as ‘Konmei China’. In 2021 it was assigned the U number 681. Konmei is the Japanese name for Kunming, the capitol of Yunnan, China. Yunnan is home to many beautiful foliage Begonias and is one of the best places in China to find Begonias.
This one is fast growing so far and very easy to grow from leaf cuttings. From a leaf or leaf section in 2-3 months it will be a 6″ tall plant. Foliage ranges from a pale green to a more emerald green (pictured here) with silvery-white bands between lateral veins. The stem and leaf base are ruby red. I’ve only had it about 6 months so cannot say how large it gets, but my largest plant is currently about 12″ tall and doesn’t seem to be slowing down.
