Peperomia caespitosa

by Chuck Nishihira

What a little charmer this Andean species is! It is a very small trailer that starts off with round leaves when the growing tip is young. Once it gets into full stride, the leaf elongates into a beautiful shape. A plant with both of these leaf forms is particularly attractive. While there may be other trailing peperomias that do this, this one still stands out as being very distinctive. It is a species that is also brightly colored and beautifully marked. Its culture is easy, but it is not a rampant grower. A terrarium with this species growing over a branch or as a small ground cover would be stellar.
