Pilea sp. Oxapampa

by Chuck Nishihira

Recently there has been a larger number of these types of ‘ferny” looking Pileas coming into the hobby.  Many are beautiful plants that will form nice large colonies.

This particular Pilea species from Oxapampa, Peru is very much in the mold of these ferny types.  But, it stays a lot smaller, maxing out at 3″ tall.  It is also a much more delicate looking species with very incised somewhat velvety leaves.

As more and more similar species arrive it will be interesting to see what sort of variations people tend to favor.  For me, I think it will take something extraordinary to unseat this favorite of mine.
